I applied to a position with WSC engineering and several months later, they still haven’t circled back with me. The position is no longer posted on the company’s careers page, so it’s clear it’s been filled, and there’s a person on LinkedIn connected with the company who recently adopted that role’s title. It reflects poorly on the company to not circle back with candidates. What is especially concerning is reviewing the LinkedIn profiles of employees at the company and seeing little to no diversity. The fact that this is the face of a company involved in water resources decision-making that impacts communities of all backgrounds is concerning. Public entities that contract with WSC and other consulting firms should aim to do business with entities that are representative of the communities which will be impacted by their work. It doesn’t matter how many DE&I certifications their head of HR includes on her list of credentials. They come across as performative when the company’s workforce is so obviously lacking in diversity. Look at the employees on its LinkedIn page, look at photos shared of employee camping trips…and then look at the communities that are being impacted by their work. Representation matters. DO BETTER. And, please, show a modicum of professional decorum by at least sending out an automated declination email to candidates who apply and don’t get a job. Before I submitted my application, I took a look at the company’s LinkedIn page and employees, and I thought “I don’t think I present white enough for serious consideration, but I’ll give it a shot anyway,” so an invitation to interview would’ve been pleasantly surprising. Not even being sent a declination email is insulting.
