Update: As a committed Escambia River Coop community member and a solar energy user, I am increasingly concerned with Powersouth's recent decision to raise the Solar Fixed Cost Recovery charge in January 2024. This hike, at $4.94 per kW (AC) of solar, represents a significant burden for solar energy adopters like me.

While Powersouth attributes this steep increase to the capital costs associated with new generation plants, including the Lowman Energy Center and Vogtle Nuclear Plant, it's important to consider the broader impact on customers who are actively contributing to a greener future. The new charge undermines the financial feasibility and incentives for solar energy, which is especially disheartening given the already high costs and over-budget issues of projects like the Vogtle nuclear plant.

As a Navy veteran (37 years) who has seen the benefits of solar power in various high-electric-cost regions worldwide, I find this move by Powersouth counterproductive. It not only penalizes those who have invested in solar energy but also sends a contradictory message regarding the adoption of renewable energy sources.

While I understand the need for infrastructure investments, I urge Powersouth to find a balance that doesn't disproportionately impact solar users. A more supportive approach towards solar energy is essential for the sake of individual customers and for the broader goal of sustainable and affordable energy solutions.

Unfortunately, Powersouth's current trajectory puts them on the 'naughty list' for those of us striving for a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. It is my hope that Powersouth reconsiders its stance and policies to better align with the needs and values of its customer base.

To all Solar owners who have had enough, I am a Solar owner living in Northwest Florida, and Powersouth is in Alabama; I will continue to address my concerns about Powersouth's policies at a federal level, and here are several avenues I have been utilizing:

1. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC): FERC regulates the interstate transmission of electricity, natural gas, and oil. While they might not have direct jurisdiction over Powersouth's specific policies, they can be a starting point for raising concerns about energy practices and policies that may impact interstate energy markets.
2. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): The EPA focuses on environmental issues. If we believe Powersouth's policies are detrimental to the promotion of renewable energy and could have environmental implications, we can contact the EPA.
3. Our State's Public Service Commission or Public Utilities Commission: These state-level agencies regulate utilities and energy in your state. They often have more direct influence over utility companies' policies and practices.
4. Our Congressional Representatives: Contacting our local Congressperson or Senators can effectively bring attention to energy policy issues. They can raise these issues at a federal level and potentially influence broader policy changes.
5. Consumer Advocacy Groups: Various consumer advocacy groups focus on energy and environmental issues. These groups often have resources and channels to escalate concerns to higher levels, including federal agencies.
6. Public Forums and Social Media: Raising awareness and garnering support through public forums, social media, and other public platforms can sometimes influence change or bring broader attention to the issue.
7. Legal Action: If we believe there are legal grounds for challenging Powersouth's policies (such as anti-competitive practices or violation of state/federal laws), consulting with an attorney specializing in energy law could be a step. This is a last resort.
