I recently had a Retül MTB practice bike fit on my premium Specialized cross-country bike with Eli, and while he was fantastic—patient, knowledgeable, and very thorough—the setup left a lot to be desired. The trainer provided was small, unstable, and clearly not suited for a proper MTB fitting, which made things more stressful than they should have been.

Despite that, Eli went above and beyond—adjusting my seatpost, brake levers, and shifters, and recommending products like RevGrips for my wrist issues and Dynaplug for tubeless repairs. It’s clear he cares about customer comfort and safety.

For a shop backed by a major brand, I’d love to see management invest in a proper MTB-compatible trainer and better accommodate the fit specialist’s needs. Overall, I still like this place and truly appreciate Eli’s dedication—just hoping they level up the equipment for an even better experience.

I took some parts out of my bike to clean them, as I live close by this bike store went asking if they can install them. I never asked for free labor or free parts. First thing the mechanic told me when I’m telling him what my bike needs he interrupted and said I don’t know where this conversation is going just after 5 seconds of me talking, then he started saying that he just have to put it out there as a disclaimer, and he doesn’t do free labor after I confronted him he said I just have to put it out there. I mean I was going to pay for whatever is not about the money buddy, but about the judgment, dang coming from Santa Cruz bike stores to here that they judge you for how you look. I mean is not a bout the money for me I can pay whatever but the way the mechanic was trying to get rid of me from this bike store. I consider myself a mountain biker and I respect everyone. So naaaa I will newer come back to this bike store. I felt their racism at max.

I've been a customer at Cognition for years now. Ben and his entire crew have always taken care of me and gone above and beyond - special ordering accessories and even bikes for me, including my most current road bike of which there were only a few made. Ben was able to locate one in my size and have it shipped from Chicago just for me!
Got a great fit from Eli on both my bikes. Cognition has a state of the art Retul fit room downstairs. The service crew is stellar - often I come in with a bike issue and they're able to resolve it within a few minutes.
Also I admit I like going there just to see the new stuff, hang out, and talk about bikes and cycling.
I have yet to do one of the weekend shop rides, but it's definitely on my To Do list...

On 11/24/2023, Ben was able to get me an e-bike I had been trying to find on the internet to no avail.

Note: One of the customer representatives (84795) from Incycle Bicycles told me they looked at very bike shop and couldn’t find one in my rider size. I guess at that point I had to investigate on my own.

I called his shop, Cognition Cyclery in San Mateo and he had one on the floor.

I was very impressed with his professionalism and his willingness to help me with this purchase over the phone. He made sure I got everything I needed as far as any additions/upgrades (tubeless) to the 2022 Specialized Kenevo SL, S-Works. He also made sure my suspension was all dialed in.

At the time my only concern was the location and distance of the shop since I was coming from San Jose. Man, this place was really easy to get to and the parking was super convenient.

If you plan on purchasing an MTB, I encourage you to come visit this shop and ask for Ben. Of course his staff is ready and willing to help you with anything you may need help with. The vibe at the shop is very good. Come check this place out and I hope my review helps you out is someway.

I was looking for a specific kids bike model, and when I called around to check pricing, cognition cycles had the best price! I drove there immediately and brought my baby along for the ride. The baby fell asleep on the drive over, and not wanting to wake him, I called cognition when I arrived and asked if they would be able to accommodate me staying in the car so that my baby could stay asleep. Their salesperson was happy to accommodate, he walked out to get my credit card, brought me out my receipt and my bike. The little guy in the backseat had an excellent nap throughout the entire experience, and my preschooler can't be happier with his new bike! Thank you, cognition cyclery for the extra good service and for accommodating my needs to make the transaction go smoothly for all!

Came in here bc my bike had a warped rear tire, we were just asking the mechanic in his opinion, what could have caused this warping to happen. And he said, "I don't like hypotheticals," and "I hate it when customers ask me that." Too bad you're in a customer facing job dude 😔 God forbid we ask you your opinion as someone who must have seen this more than we do, just wanted your professional expertise jeez. He was nicer to the dog than he was to us 🥲

The extra star we're giving is him saying "we're on the expensive end" after he gave us the quote. And that we could bring it to the bike store down the street. Which we did and they were GREAT, so ty for that.

It was obvious that he took one look at us and determined that we weren't part of their usual clientele.

Super cool bike shop. I own 3 Specialized bikes bought elsewhere... I've never bought anything here, but I had a dinner meeting in San Mateo and stopped in to work on my laptop for an hour. The staff was super nice and the space is REALLY cool. Great place to hang out lol 🙂
I would absolutely come back to shop or for service... or to just hang out with some great bikes and gear for an hour or two 😉

I was contemplating writing a review & saw that Jesus who commented 3 weeks prior had the same rude experience with one of their mechanics I feel I should say something. I went in & purchased a tire repair kit but was more curious to get an opinion from one of the mechanics on a service I had done from another bike shop. I asked him his opinion about whether he could verify if the other bike shop actually serviced my rear shock. He looked at me like I was a complete douche for asking him. & said if they told you they serviced it then they probably did. Thanks dude. Definitely looking for a good bike shop to service my full suspension bike and it won't be this place. 3 stars for below average
