If I could give zero stars, I would.

American Home Shield is the worst appliance warranty company I have ever dealt with. I submitted a request on December 13, 2024, to fix my dryer and dishwasher. It took three months, multiple phone calls, and four separate requests before they finally fixed the dishwasher on February 24, 2025—but the dryer is still not repaired.

The last time I spoke with a representative, they scheduled an appointment for March 3, 2025, between 12 PM and 5 PM. By 4:30 PM, no one had shown up, so I called Active Appliance Service Inc., the service provider. They informed me that American Home Shield had canceled the appointment—again.

Coincidentally, two days ago, American Home Shield called me about renewing my plan. I told them I was still waiting for my dryer to be fixed and that they could call me back after it was repaired. Now, I suspect they canceled my appointment just to pressure me into renewing.

By the way, their service costs $2,295 per year—and for that price, I got months of frustration and an unfinished repair.
"$2,295 a year for broken appliances and endless frustration? No thanks."

AHS: American Horror Story

This company is an absolute scam. Despite indicating that they fix pretty much any home repair issue, we have spent many hundreds of dollars and many hours on the phone with them (I will note, phone calls go to very nice but completely incompetent call-center employees who cannot resolve any issues, but instead provide email addresses to AHS employees who have never once responded to our emails). We have nothing to show for our money and time except that our ever-running toilet is now fixed, which could have been done by our handyman for a fraction of the cost.

We have spent the $100 dispatch fee for multiple issues, and at every turn, the dispatcher comes, provides some vague reason for not being able to complete the work “on this visit”, and then never follows up. After relentlessly chasing down each issue, we have now received SIX letters in the mail referencing The Fine Print in our contracts that for one reason or another exempts the company from responsibility of the issue. They spend more time referencing obscure exemption elements of the contract than they do resolving simple issues.

This has been an absolute waste of money and time. Any handyman will provide better service, lower costs, and more peace of mind. 0/10 do not recommend

This is the WORST company I have ever dealt with. It has been 12 days since I put in my service request, 3 phone calls with 40 minute hold times, one service visit, and my dishwasher is still not fixed.

I have been paying for a home warranty service for several years with American Home Shield. My dishwasher just stopped working on 12/26 (11 days ago) and I finally had a chance to use my warranty. Now I’m stuck in limbo waiting for a repair I’ve paid for but not given any actual date for the repair… maybe a week, maybe more. Granted it was over the holidays, but this is completely out of the realm of reasonable service time. I can order the OEM part myself on Amazon and have it here tomorrow. Watch a short YouTube video and I can install it myself… which I may have to do since they are telling me it may be another WEEK before they can get the part and have the repair guy come back out.

It has been nearly impossible to talk to anyone through this process. They have never called me, I have had to call them every step of the way… to get a date for service, to get an update on the part order… There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of service. What a complete waste of money. I will not be using this company anymore and strongly suggest anyone looking for a home warranty look elsewhere.

The only reason why I gave rating 1 is because I cannot go lower than that.

I have been trying to get my furnace repaired for over a month now.
They say the contracting company is not responding. They did respond once but they said they have the wrong parts, and never heard from the contracting company again. I call AHS everyday for help, but I am getting nowhere. Endless calls with representative, but yet the issue is not resolved. Every time I call I have to explain the issue from the start, and they keep saying they will help things escalate but it goes no where.
I feel like the representatives are also not doing a good job actually understanding the situation and are not really being thoughtful for expediting my matter, specially since this has been taking such a long time.

I am losing faith in their service

This place is a scam. We're on week 3 of having a dishwasher that doesn't work. They charged us $100 to send someone to our house that told us your dishwasher works. When we looked up the company they sent, Antech Appliances, there was no surprise. Antech has terrible reviews and a track record of taking people's money and telling them, your appliance is fine. Seems like a scam, Home Shield charges you $100, pays Antech $50, and we're out $100 and still without a working dishwasher.

It's a WORST service I have ever got from the company. My HVAC system needs a replacement because of the normal wear and tear. But they are not willing to cover any costs of the new system or installation as they claim on the website. So what am I paying for? Is that an option to call technician for an extra 100$ to do nothing?

I'm revision my review of AMERICAN HOME SHIELD today as I've had more good experiences with them now.
So my 14-year-old water heater went out. The plumber said it needed a new burner assembly and a gas valve box. Then, when they came back, they only had the burner assembly. He said the gas valve box should have been included in the box with the burner! So then they had to go and get the gas valve box, which took a couple hours. They left the unit draining when they left but inside my water heater closet the pipe was leaking onto the wooden floor. Came back and put that in.
With the cost of both of those components, the plumber said it would have been more cost-effective to just replace the whole water heater. Given all the work that it took.
Plus I paid for American home shield at the copay, $125 for them to come out and then had to pay $320 for access. To take apart one simple in front of my water heater, which brings the water back to my water heater from my furnace, which seemed overpriced to me. Given that it cost me $425 and I have been paying for American home Shields for more than a year.
I think this should have been a full water heater replacement to begin with, because it was 14 years old.
Then the plumber told me the that He could not recommend that to begin with or he would get a bad rating with the company, which infuriated me.
We were without hot water for 6 days and I had to spend a half day home when they first came out and then a whole day for the repair.
After he left I read the liability waiver on the receipt which says that they are not responsible for any future failure or damage that may result.
This is my first experience with AHS. I was really hoping it would be a good one. I am very disappointed. I will post this experience on Google reviews!

Stay away from this company. Summer AC Repairs were not completed after multiple call backs, long telephone hold times, unprofessional delay tactics and then they agreed to pay a cash payment that was never paid after multiple calls as agreed. Stay away.! Hard to use and better to self insure and get your own services from real contractors, which you will have do using this Warranty company . Hot summer over two months no Ac!
