This person came to my home asking to see my power bill and promised lower rates than my provider.

If you Google Direct Energy, countless articles, Reddit and Facebook posts paint a picture of this company.

They use pushy sales tactics to get you to sign a contract, promise you a lower rate than your service provider that ends up being (in some cases) twice the cost and make it extraordinarily difficult to cancel.

Do not answer for these ghouls and report them to the police, as they likely do not have solicitation permits.

Absolute scammers! Don't use! Electric bill used to be in the 50s and it kept getting higher and higher each month up to 200. After we cancelled went straight back down. They basically stole our money. Don't listen to them.
If you happen to fall for it, just call your primary electric company to make sure it's off your account. Direct energy cancelled on their end but wouldn't give us a confirmation number or email. Didn't trust them so called the primary electric company after cancelling with them.

Reading the reviews is interesting as Direct Energy is NOT a scam artist. In fact they are one of the top suppliers in North America. They buy energy in the wholesale market to sell to end users. The utility (I see PSE&G mentioned a few times) has a "price to compare" on their bill. This should be the price you need to look for when signing up for service. Hope this clears up a few things.

Scam artists, I was automatically enrolled by my township in this program. They buy electric from PSE&G and then sell it back to you at twice the price. I contacted the township and they stated what Direct Energy Services is doing is against the law and violates the contract with the township. That's all well and good, but the homeowners are left paying the bill off, its being billed as a charge through PSE&G, so if you don't pay they will shut off your gas and electric.

Do not trust these scam artists. Do not get duped like me. I did sign up then I realized what I’d done and cancelled next day. Spoken to them THREE times and keep getting different confirms but no one seems to be able to tell me if I am officially cancelled. I have a paper trail and also a sent a written cancel request by certified mail to be even more certain. I will go court if they try to bill me one damned cent. Call the damn police if they come to your door!!

Biggest SCAM OF MY LIFE !!!!!!! Please please stay away and DO NOT fall into the trap that I did my bill before them was only $80 a month and after they scammed me I was paying $380-$400 dollars a MONTH!!!! I was very Naïve because I listened to what they said about saving me money and now I’m trying to contact these scam artist to take me out their list of victims!! I’m so angry I noticed the change a year and a half ago but I didn’t understand what was causing it until recently when I took a closer look on my bill( I usually pay online so I didn’t see that they were billing me a separate rate all this time!) JUST BE CAREFUL AND DONT DO IT

Stay away from this company. They are scammers they told you your bill will be lower but it's not true. They called me I thought they were affiliated with nj natural gas. After one year I realized I was paying $80 extra on my bill every month. My normal bill was $100 after they came on my bill was $300. The utility company was charging $0.30 per kwh while they are charging $0.90 ....STAY AWAY!!!

Very poor service. The terms are unreasonable. I live in an apartment, and I signed up for a 20 month plan. Shame on me for not reading the fine print, but they are going to charge me an early cancellation fee for moving to an area that they do not service. It's a trap, and IT'S NOT ANY LESS EXPENSIVE. They promised less expensive energy costs, but it was actually more. Horrible company. Makes me so angry. Life's too short to be this angry. Ugh!
