I recently went to the Gallo Vineyards Compost yard to get compost for our Community Life Garden. We use this compost to amend our garden soil. For $18 I got a truck load of compost. Although finding this place is a bit tricky. Google Map helps but you have to go to the office first to pay for the compost. The staff is very friendly. Once I got the receipt, I headed to the yard. It’s tucked in and you have to drive through a tree lined road until you get to the piles. On the left is a break station but you have to turn right. There’s another station located next to the big white tank. That’s where you go. I only waited a couple of minutes until the guy with the front loader tractor came to get my receipt. He then told me how and where to position my truck to get it filled. I chose to get out of the truck and take more pictures. There’s a variety of soil and compost products to choose from and you can’t beat the price.

Re COMPOST: I asked re content used. Did they use sewer sludge (as some do)? I was told no. They test the materials (in the lab) to verify that there are no toxic or other elements [such as heavy metals], etc.
I bought 1/2 "bucket" (my truck bed full). It was very dark, almost black. When emptying the truck, I noticed: small pieces of glass, of plastic bags, very small pieces of what appeared to be a type of food or chip bag, like mylar, a piece of cloth. But most disturbing was that it sparkled! The whole pile, thoroughly mixed in, were tiny pieces, too small to see, even with a magnifying glass. Only the reflected light. Like the sparkle in pearlized nail polish. Like the reflected light from my ring's tiny diamond chip. Even sand with "fools gold" doesn't look like that.
Whatever it is, cannot be natural, and certainly not be on "compost"!
I was also told it sat for a minimum of 3 months.
The compost was HOT to the touch, I would burn my hand on it, in all areas of the pile- top and center. And it smelled strongly of ammonia!
Also, it was heavy. It had a lot of visible sand in it.
I was not happy.
We'll see how the plants grow with it!

I've been coming here for 25 years. They have good prices and help you unload with a backhoe. I dump all my green waist here from my business "Hennesay Yard Clean Up". $25 currently for my 6x6. Everywhere else in Fresno is about double. Also all my customers are extremely happy with the great quality Ground Cover offered here.

I originally purchased the wrong type of soil. I got home and was panicked because I had an entire truck bed of soil I couldn’t use. I called the office and they were extremely helpful. They told me to come back with the truck load and we can exchange for the correct mulch. They were so helpful. I’ve been using the mulch and it’s perfect.

First time there, first employee was rude, the next employee loading my truck dumped half the load on the ground and left, I had to scoop up the displaced load with my hands because he just left and didn’t recoup the fallen load.
