All colleges have their ups and downs. In the beginning, I did not understand why I was going through what I was going through. As an adult, I understand why I was going through what I was going through. People need to learn to take accountability, ownership and responsibility for your own actions. I read everything. Learn how to read the room when you step into it. Understaffing can lead to overwhelming and as a customer service manager, I know this. As a student at this HBCU, I have had the best college experience with all the resources and opportunities, I have learned to open up more and engage more on campus. Every college in the world has problems because we are humans and people make mistakes. I have been to PWIs and HBCUs, this is the longest I have stayed in one college, and this is where I will continue my education. I was not paid to give this review; this is my honest opinion regarding my current college.

This school is AWFUL. Do yourself a favor and avoid at all costs! The instructors and curriculum are horrible. Instructors do not respond to your emails until you CC their supervisor in them. You cannot drop a class yourself, you have to contact the records department to do so, but they never answer the phone or emails. Twice I had to get academic affairs involved just to get classes dropped, and to top it off, they still charged me for the classes because I “missed the cut off date” due the the records department not doing their job.
I made the smart choice to leave this school and register with a different university. I have been contacting the financial aid department via email and phone for nearly two months now to release their claim on my 2024 aid and grants, but they are refusing to do so. I’ve called and emailed academic affairs and the director of financial aid as well, but they are ignoring me completely. They are still claiming that I am a student there and refusing to release my funds. I have missed two start dates with my new university, and am about to miss the last start date due to this. I have now reported TSU for fraud to the U.S. Department of Education.

Run. Do not waste your time and money with this disaster of a “school”.

My daughter attends and I Absolutely Love it! No place is perfect, but I know she is cared for, seen, and being educated!
When I attended orientation, I felt nothing but love! The energy, the standard of excellence, and realness was EVERYTHING!

My daughter was calling and emailing the school for 2 weeks+ for a form she needed. No answer and no reply. I decided to drive her there because it was needed for her to attend medical school. Upon arrival to the school there was a visitor parking lot across the street that you needed a permit to park or will be towed. Went to the machine and it was down and was to told try another machine that was nowhere in site. Once in the school security informed us that he didn’t have anything to do with the parking and asked what we needed. Went to the records department and it got worse. The staff were seemed unconcerned of what we needed. It was a guy named Juan that tried his best to help. I was holding my cool, but one of the 2 black ladies was being ruder than the other. We drove almost 3 hours to get 1 form sent to the other school not for bad customer service but for help since the phones and emails aren’t being responded to. I asked for a receipt of the form being received and was told to take a picture of the form for my records. There were other students in the office that came in for help but were pretty much pushed to the side. All this to say being rude and nasty to those that you see should not be in your agenda. You’re suppose to be there to help not hinder! Thank you again Juan for your help. The form was received within 3-5 business days.

I graduated here back in Fall 2017 with my BBA in Accounting. It's a rocky road dealing with staff; even during slow times outside of registration. I used to work in the college system, so I understand the workflow of how I am supposed to handle being a student (which offices to go to for help, who to ask help from, keeping track of specific documents I need to turn in, etc.). However, it was difficult to get help when needed. Some staff can be very rude and unhelpful if they ever answered their phone/email. I would also go to the main campus offices to try to talk to someone, and there were several occurrences where offices would be randomly closed without putting it in their voicemail or webpage. This is not helpful when you work full-time and have to take off work to go to campus.
Aside from the nightmarish organization of student services, this is a really great university! Most of my professors were very passionate about their teaching, and actually showed willingness to help you if you are struggling or congratulate you if you are doing well. Going into upper-level accounting courses were tough, but rewarding, and I felt like the professors and classmates were there to support me all the way.
What's also great about this university is how affordable it is. I managed to graduate here with no student loans. It's hard, but doable. I also appreciate the accreditation is the same as other local large universities.
So if you are looking for an affordable and good university, check out TSU. Just be prepared to take off time, and prepare for some disappointments dealing with staff and admin.

And as you can see most reviews are "google user" so I wouldn't be surprise if the staff is actually rating the school themselves, but this school is horrible. The staff is rude, unprofessional, and could care less about the overall wellbeing of the students as long as you pay tuition. The campus police are nonexistent they partake in activities I'm almost positive should not be happening. One of my friends was assaulted and the swept the case under the rug, never filed documents, and never followed up with the case. The financial aid staff takes money from out-of-state students and applies it to in-state students accounts (ie. workstudy, loans, etc.) because that is 90% of their student population. The department staff never answer phones, emails, and their office hours are false advertisement. The bursars office has lost money and payments sent to them and their reply is "sorry" followed by never answering the phones again. They have personally lost housing payments of mine 2 years straight which resulted in me losing housing and or paying double. This school almost lost its accreditation and really they should have because half of the students don't go to class but the professors past them anyway because of their "friendships." This is by far one of the biggest mistakes and bad choices I have ever made in my life. Had I known the undermining and the unprofessionalism this school advocates I would have never committed to it. I have been here since my freshman year and due to their "credit equivalency" scheme I could not transfer. The tuition is definitely not worth the education you are paying for. The professors are more concerned with being "cool" then actually teaching and the administration staff is more concerned with being paid then actually helping the student body. I hate the school after graduating I never will return (Now I understand why Oprah didn't), I hate the staff, and the president has yet to follow up the duties of Dr. Shields who I believe made the biggest changes now TSU is back where it started from since her departure. Anyone considering this school as a secondary education PLEASE DONT.
